2018 Chevy Equinox vs. Ford Escape: Battle for Best SUV in America

You’ve got things to do, places to be, people to see. Ah! Such is the life of a busy do-it-all-er. And there’s no better vehicle to make your life easier than a compact SUV. If you’re in the market for a convenient new crossover, the 2018 Chevy Equinox is on dealers’ lots across the U.S. now. With a peppier engine and other core design improvements compared to previous versions, this new Equinox rates as the pick of its class.

Just saying that doesn’t mean much, of course. Let’s put it up against one of its close competitors, the 2018 Ford Escape, to see how the numbers stack up for each vehicle.

SUV Comfort & Style

The 2018 Equinox continues its run of being a spacious, comfortable vehicle for the five passengers it is designed to seat. As U.S. News and World Report states of the 2017 version, “It has some of the roomiest seats – front and back – in the class, and the cabin materials… are of good quality.” On the other hand, Motor Trend‘s review of the Escape, which included ratings on multiple models, notes that it had a roomy interior but “the styling was showing its age.” The 2018 Ford Escape SE—likely to be the highest-selling variant of the vehicle—came in sixth in Motor Trend’s rankings, in part due to the “aged interior, tight back seat, and slow acceleration.”

How Much Horsepower?

There are two things every car owner should pay attention to: Their engine and fuel economy. For 2018, Chevy has engineered an Equinox that churns out more horsepower than the Escape by quite a large margin. The 2018 Equinox comes with two available turbocharged four-cylinder engines (170 and 252 horsepower, respectively); the Escape’s engine options make 168, 170, and 245 horsepower, in the same 1.5- and 2.0-liter varieties. Although the horsepower difference is not substantial, a buyer who accepts reduced gas mileage should expect a stronger engine, which the Escape does not offer.

Best Features

Although price, performance, and comfort are the main concerns when buying a new SUV, for some customers it’s the built-in features that are most important or even critical, depending on their needs.

Yet again, in this Equinox vs. Escape match, the Chevy Equinox reigns supreme. Comparing cabins, the Equinox outstrips the Escape handily. Chevy’s new SUV has a ton of standard features in its lower trims, including Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a touchscreen entertainment system, proximity key entry, push-button start, Chevy’s unique Teen Driver system, GM OnStar featuring 4G LTE and a Wi-Fi hotspot, and voice commands. If you would make use of all these features, the Equinox can save you thousands compared to choosing them as options in another SUV.

Gas Mileage

Although gas prices haven’t reached the same stratospheric levels as in the early part of the decade, an SUV owner must always be aware of mileage issues. This is an area where the Equinox shines. The Chevy Equinox is EPA rated at 39 mpg on the highway, far outpacing the 29 mpg for the Escape.

Show Me the Price

Whether you plan on buying or leasing an SUV in Lee’s Summit, the Chevy Equinox has the advantage over the Escape in MSRP. Though the difference in MSRP may seem comparable, lease-oriented customers will find a significantly better monthly payment with the Equinox. Chevy’s leases are designed for owners to achieve payments as low as $199 per month for a mid-range Chevy Equinox model, while the Escape’s payments can run over $230 per month for the base model.
